A little history...

Originally, Bourgville was a medieval fortress, part of the defence of the Loudunaise region. In the 18th century, it was the property of the Marquis de Persan and was sold in 1791 to a bourgeois from Paris, secretary to King Louis XVI, who was guillotined in Paris on 16 May 1794.

From 1816 onwards, Bourgville was renovated and enlarged. The large building was rented out to the administration from 1 January 1833 to 31 December 1871 as a mounted gendarmerie, replacing the "Chêne Vert" (green oak) hotel situated at the junction of the rue Saint Avertin with the rue du Château. This house belonged to the same family of notaries (notary, doctors, and mayors) for two centuries, namely, the Gravier Berniers
